Results – happy days and not so happy ones..

When all you’ve got to do is wait for that little bit of paper, that decides your future, to be posted through your letter box by Postman Pat... the world seems like it’s come to a stop. You get loads of ‘stuff’ from UCAS (advisory letters and detail conformations), loads of ‘stuff’ from the universities you applied to (summer prep projects, reading lists, lecture notes and equipment lists), but alas not the one letter that’s actually going to tell you what’s gonna go down.

Once you have applied to your universities (gone through the interviews and you’ve got to the stage where you’ve received all your offers) you then have to decide what to do. You either get a conditional offer or an unconditional offer. Conditional means that you have to get specific grades from your current course before you’ll be accepted... which is fine unless you know you’re failing and then you’re going to have to do some serious ass kissing! Unconditional means you don’t have to do anything more (lucky buggers).

You then generally accept two of your offers – a firm offer and an insurance offer. The firm offer is the one you really want to go to (but make sure you read everything they require carefully before you choose this) and the insurance is the next best thing (but with lower entry requirements).

Even if you have not quite achieved the grades required, the university or college may lower its offer and confirm your place depending on the demand of the course. Alternatively you may get offered a different course.
There is always something called ‘Clearing’ which helps you get on to a course or into a university, but I don’t really understand how this works myself - UCAS will automatically send you info on this.

Back to the eternal wait, sitting on the floor under the letter box, I found a monotonous game like solitaire helped pass the time... either that or draw some nice pictures to stick on the front door so your postman will like you and give you the letter. Don’t get yourself too worked up because whatever the outcome is there are so many different options and paths you can choose. If things don’t exactly go according to plan then try contacting UCAS or the university you wanted to go to.

It seems like I’ve been concentrating on the negative outcome of your results but honestly I’m just trying to prepare you for any outcome (and mentally prepare myself at the same time!!). Obviously, congratulations are in order if you do get the require results for the university of your choice! Everything will then slot in to place nicely and you will get even more gumpf through the post. I would then suggest looking in to student finance, accommodation and all that jazz.

Myself, after what seemed like months of waiting I got the letter telling me that I did indeed get successfully into my university. You won’t believe the weight off my shoulders and my sigh of relief! Come September I’m off to study BA Hons Fashion Design for Industry... I’m so excited!!!!!
Now it’s time to concentrate on the last drunken nights of debauchery back home before I leave!
