What is Gloth?

Glam goth woman

Here at Alt fashion we first came across the term Gloth earlier this year flicking through a couple of copies of fashion magazines. Described as glam goth with notes of dark seductive lipstick; think more deep dark red, than gothic black.

After spotting it amongst the A/W 2010 collections in February's London fashion week we were further intrigued. What is this Gloth trend?, and where on earth did it start?

Gloth has been name dropped since 2009, with it initially seeming to start as a celebrity trend. An A-list take on gothic and glam trends combined to make a more intriguing look, described as "A result of glamour meeting goth chic, 'Gloth' combines the glitziest looks that fashion has to offer, with the darker side of style" [1]

Amongst dark red lips and smoky eyes, teamed with dark glossy nails; when it comes to a Glam goth make up kit. [2]

The Glam goth; or Gloth look does seem to have had a slight acceleration due to the recent increase in vampire culture lately. With vampires hitting both the silver screen and tv programmes from True Blood, to Twilight.

Dark gothic make up

Taking notes from popular culture, it seems that the celebrity A-list have been jotting down style tips from every hip, fang ladened actor on screen.

When it comes to a Gloth(ic) look it consists of a glamorous take on a gothic look; think more high fashion than traditional goth. Oodles of sequins and glitter shine off of latex, and pvc; mixed with notes of lace, chiffons, and lycras. From black skinny jeans teamed up with sequinned mohair cardigans and dazzling high heels; to the quintessential black dress with seamed stockings, black glittery heels, and a sequinned clutch.

But where this style takes notes from alternative culture, we in turn can easily pinch a few style tips back from the Glam goth look.
